Labour's Honourable Rebels

Forty-nine Labour MPs rebelled against the Government in the vote on the much-criticised 90-day detention proposal, according to official division lists. They handed megalomaniac Tony Blair his first House of Common defeat since he became prime minister in 1997. The honourable backbenchers included 11 former ministers: Clare Short, Nick Raynsford, Michael Meacher, Frank Dobson, Mark Fisher, Doug Henderson, Kate Hoey, Glenda Jackson, Peter Kilfoyle, Tony Lloyd and Chris Mullin. Just two of the rebels were Black, Diane Abbott, and Sadiq Khan - the latter the only Muslim MP, of the four in the Commons, prepared to stand up for a community most likely to be targeted by more draconian 'anti-terrorism' laws. There are 15 Black MPs.
