United clinch double

SOBBING John Terry was devastated after  losing to Manchester United on Wednesday night,    6 - 5  on penalties in the Champions League Final, writes Chris Gaynor.

Chelsea Captain Terry, who slipped on a crucial penalty kick,  was consoled by disappointed boss Avram Grant.

But in contrast,  hero goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, (pictured left)  was jubilant  after saving a Nicholas Anelka penalty  to  clinch the double  in rain-soaked Moscow.

The nervy shoot out almost went Chelsea's way after Cristiano Ronaldo missed one from Petr Cech.

Jubilant United chief,   Sir Alex Ferguson, said on Sky Sports: "I thought it was a good game."

"It's the first time I've won a penalty shoot out. First time."

He added: "When you miss a penalty you know you are struggling."

"But I think we had the better chances in the match."

Footballing wizard Cristiano Ronaldo kicked off Manchester United in the first half by towering tall and heading the ball past Cech.

But then in the  second half Chelsea fired back to level at 1 - 1 through a Frank Lampard tap in.

Disgraced Didier Drogba was sent off in the dying minutes of extra time after slapping a United player.

Captain John Terry managed to prevent United from winning in extra time by kicking a ball off the line - but then made a booby of a penalty kick by slipping before kicking the ball against the post.

But emotional Lampard said he was not to blame for the penalty miss.

"John is Mr Chelsea. He wants this as much as anybody."

He added: "It's cruel - but that is Champions League for you."

Avram Grant said: "This is not the last time we will be in the final. We will be in the final again and we will take it."

He added: "We had great opportunity and hit the post twice - but lost on penalties. What can I say."

It could be Grant's last time as Chelsea manager - assuming Billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich decides to look elsewhere for new managerial  blood.

United won the premiership over a week ago - and this is the third time they have won the Champions League.

Chelsea have each year got closer to winning the trophy.
